Context Meaning in Discourse

This post includes a detailed analysis of Context Meaning in Discourse along with a description of the types of context in discourse.

Let’s have a look at Context Meaning in Discourse:

The context in discourse analysis is the social system or structural framework in which a conversation takes place.

For example, people may have a conversation in a bar, which would provide a different context than having a conversation in an office.

The context of an idea or event is the general situation that relates to it and which helps it to be understood.

Types of Contexts

There are 3 types of contexts:

  1. Linguistic context
  2. Situational Context
  3. Cultural Context

Linguistic Context

Linguistic context refers to the context within the discourse, that is, the relationship between words, phrases, sentences, and even paragraphs. Take the word “bachelor” as an example. We can’t understand the exact meaning of the sentence “He is a bachelor.” without the linguistic context to make clear the exact meaning of this word.

Situational Context

Initially, situational context, or context of the situation, refers to the environment, time and place, etc. in which the discourse occurs, and also the relationship between the participants. Although, we approach this theory through the concept of register, which helps to clarify the interrelationship of language with context by handling it under three basic headings: field, tenor, and mode.

Cultural Context

To begin with, cultural context refers to the culture, customs, and background of an era in language communities in which the speakers participate. As a matter of fact, language is a social phenomenon, and we can tie it closely to the social structure and value system of society. Therefore, language can not avoid being influenced by all these factors like social role, social status, sex, age, etc.

Conclusion

Overall, this blog post discusses the context of language and its types in detail. Finally, there are three types of contexts: linguistic context, situational context, and cultural context.
