The meaning of Adjective in Hindi is given below. An adjective is a word that adds to the meaning of a noun or pronoun. It is a word that modifies a noun or pronoun or describes a noun or pronoun.

Adjective (विशेषण)

The definition of Adjective in Hindi is given below:

विशेषण वह शब्द है जो संज्ञा या सर्वनाम का अर्थ जोड़ता है। यह एक ऐसा शब्द है जो किसी संज्ञा या सर्वनाम को संशोधित करता है, या एक ऐसा शब्द है जो किसी संज्ञा या सर्वनाम का वर्णन करता है।

 

visheshan vah shabd hai jo sangya ya 
sarvanaam ka arth jodata hai.
yah ek aisa shabd hai jo kisee sangya
ya sarvanaam ko sanshodhit karata hai,
ya ek aisa shabd hai jo kisee sangya ya
sarvanaam ka varnan karata hai.

Adjective Examples:

Good, bad, long, short, red, wide, two, etc.

This is a good book.

I like red color.

The tail of the parrot is long.

Two wide feet.

(good, red, long, and wide are adjectives)

Degrees of Adjectives:

There are 3 degrees of Adjectives:

  1. Absolute Degree   Tall
  2. Comparative Degree   Taller
  3. Superlative Degree  Tallest

Absolute Degree modifies one noun or pronoun.

Comparative Degree modifies and compares two nouns or pronouns.

Superlative Degree modifies and compares more than two nouns or pronouns.

Rules for making comparative & superlative degrees of adjectives:

There are 2 Regular rules to make comparative and superlative degrees of adjectives.

Rule 1

One-Syllable Adjectives  Comparative Degree (er)  Superlative degree (est)

Short  Shorter  Shortest

Rule 2

Two or more Syllable Adjectives  Comparative Degree (more)  Superlative degree (most)

Handsome  More handsome  Most handsome

Beautiful  More beautiful  Most beautiful

Irregular Adjectives:

Irregular adjectives do not follow any rule. They make their comparative and superlative degrees in different ways.

Degrees of Adjective Examples:

Absolute  Comparative  Superlative

Good         Better               Best

Bad            Worse              Worst

Little         Less                  Least

Many        More                Most

Placement of Adjectives:

According to their placement, adjectives can be divided into two categories:

  1. Attributive Adjective
  2. Predicative Adjectives

Attributive Adjective

Attributive adjectives are placed before nouns.

E.g. Red shirt, tall boy, pretty girl, etc.

(Red, tall, and pretty are attributive adjectives)

Predicative Adjective

Predicative adjectives are placed after the noun or pronoun.

She is busy.

Ahmed is obedient.

Adjectives that can only be Predicative or Attributive:

afraid, asleep, alike, alone, ashamed, awake, aware

Adjectives that can only be Attributive

elder, eldest, live, old, little, mere, and sheer
