The most common types of nouns are as under:
1. Proper Noun:
A proper noun is the name of a specific person, place, thing, or idea. It starts with a capital letter and is inclusive of a common noun.
Examples: Ali, Sara, Lahore, Pakistan, etc.
Ali (boy), Sara (girl), Lahore (city), Pakistan (country)
2. Common Noun:
A common noun is the name of an ordinary person, place, thing, or idea.
Examples: boy, girl, table, city, country, freedom, truth, etc.
3. Title Noun:
•Title noun is a name given to someone for his present status or for getting some position. There can be two kinds of titles:
•Given Titles: Mr., Ms., Mrs., Sir, Madam
•Earned Titles: Dr., President, Lecturer, Professor, Prime Minister
4. Collective Nouns:
•Collective noun is a single name given to more than one person, animal, place, thing, or idea.
Examples:
•Team: A group of players
•Army: A group of soldiers
•Class: A group of students
•Crowd: A group of people
(Team, Army, Class, and Crowd are examples of collective nouns)
Types of Common Nouns:
Common nouns are further divided into two main categories:
- Concrete nouns
- Abstract nouns
Concrete Nouns:
A noun that can be experienced through one of the five senses (taste, touch, sight, hearing, or smell) and has physical existence.
Examples:
Pencil, computer, glasses, notebook, pillow, etc.
Abstract Nouns:
An abstract noun is a noun that cannot be experienced using one of the five senses (i.e., taste, touch, see, hear, smell) and can not be physically touched.
Examples:
Love, hate, courage, freedom, truth, happiness, sorrow, etc.
Another classification categorizes nouns into countable and uncountable nouns.
Countable Nouns:
•Nouns that can be counted are countable nouns. They are individual people, animals, places, things, or ideas that can be counted.
Examples:
Apple, phone, book, button, chair, table, ball, etc.
Uncountable Nouns:
•Uncountable nouns are those that can not be counted but can be measured. They are not individual objects, so they cannot be counted.
Examples:
Sugar, rice, water, information, intelligence, bread, equipment, etc.
Nouns used as both countable and uncountable:
Some nouns can be used as both countable and uncountable nouns but usually, the noun has a very different meaning in each case.

| Light | There are four lights in that room. | It is not very light in here. |
| Room | My house has eight rooms. | There is not enough room to do that. |
| Noise | Did you hear a noise? | There is too much noise to concentrate. |
Other types of nouns:
Some other specific types of nouns are also there that are not present in every grammar. These types are widely used but are not so common. I am going to discuss these types below:
Verbal Nouns:
A verbal noun is a noun formed from a verb.
Most verbal nouns are either (Present Participle) or (Infinitive).
Present Participle: A verb ending in –ing (also called Gerund)
Infinitive: The base form of the verb preceded by “to”
Examples:
I like fishing. (Present Participle)
I like to fish. (Infinitive)
We add ‘er’ to the verb to make it the doer of an action.
Example:
Sing Singer
Murder Murderer
Examples:

Compound Nouns:
Two or more words make compound nouns while coming together.
We write some compound nouns as one word, while others as a hyphenated word, and others as two words.
Compound Nouns Examples:
Method Example
Noun + Noun Fireman, bedroom, football
Verb + Noun Breakfast; plaything
Adjective + Noun Full moon, blackmail
Preposition + Noun Afternoon, overstatement
