The past perfect tense is for talking about something that happened before something else.

Situation

Imagine waking up one morning and stepping outside to grab the newspaper. On your way back in, you notice a mysterious message scrawled across your front door: Ali was here.

When you’re telling this story to your friends later, you might say something like:

“I turned back to the house and saw that someone named Ali had defaced my front door!”

Structure of Past perfect tense:

Affirmative/Positive Sentence

Subject + had + Past Participle (3rd Form of Verb) + Object

Negative Sentence

Subject + had + Not + Past Participle (3rd Form of Verb) + Object

Interrogative Sentence

Had + Subject + Past Participle (3rd Form of Verb) + Object?

Wh Interrogative Sentence

Wh word + Had + Subject + Past Participle (3rd Form of Verb) + Object?

Examples of Past perfect tense:

Affirmative/Positive Sentence

  1. After Sara had finished her work, she went to lunch.
  2. Ahmed washed the floor when the maid had gone.

Negative Sentence

  1. He didn’t say anything until she had finished talking.
  2. My mother had not eaten at that restaurant before today.
  3. Naima hadn’t had time to explain her side of the story.
  4. My friends hadn’t ever gone to France.
  5. My friends had never gone to the USA either.

Interrogative Sentence

  1. Had you cleaned up the mess by the time they came home?
  2. Had Adam ever spoken to the CEO before he was fired?
  3. What had they said that made him so angry?
  4. John had known about cancer for a couple of years, hadn’t he?

Past Perfect Tense Examples in Hindi:

सारा अपना काम खत्म करने के बाद लंच के लिए गई।

saara apana kaam khatm karane ke baad lanch ke lie gaee.

जब तक उसने अपनी बात ख़त्म नहीं कर ली तब तक उसने कुछ नहीं कहा।

jab tak usane apanee baat khatm nahin kar lee tab tak usane kuchh nahin kaha.

क्या आपने उनके घर आने तक गंदगी साफ़ कर दी थी?

kya aapane unake ghar aane tak gandagee saaf kar dee thee?
