Tense in English

This post includes the definition of tense in English. It gives the definitions of three types of tenses. These three types of tenses are: present tense, past tense, and future tense. Tense refers to time and these three are different times.

What is a Tense?

Tense shows the time of action in a sentence usually performed by the subject of the sentence.

The action is called a verb.

How Many Tenses are there in English?

There are 3 tenses:

  1. Present
  2. Past
  3. Future

Present Tense:

It shows the time at present.

Examples:

He takes a bath daily.

I am reading.

She has eaten food.

I have been listening to music for two hours.

Past Tense:

It shows the time that has passed.

Examples:

I took tea yesterday.

I was writing a letter two days ago.

He had left before I reached.

He had been washing dishes since last night.

Future Tense:

It shows the time that is yet to come.

Examples:

He will come tomorrow.

They will be waiting outside.

She will have left.
